How to Paint Your First Barn Quilt

This guide walks through a first barn quilt project end to end, using the free Four Winds pattern from the Barn Quilt Planner. It links out to the specialized guides for board prep, taping, and printing rather than repeating their detail here.

What you need

A flat board sized for your project, exterior primer and paint suitable for that board, painter's tape, a pencil or carbon paper for transferring the pattern, a ruler, and a printer able to print at true 100% (Actual Size) scale. A larger panel needs more paper pages and more tape; a small first panel around 12 to 16 inches keeps the project short.

1. Get your files

Open the Barn Quilt Planner, select Four Winds, set a width and palette, and download the file set at no charge. You will get a start-here PDF, a painting-map PDF, a full-size printable outline PDF, the pattern SVG, and pattern notes.

2. Prepare your board

Confirm the board's actual dimensions before you print, and prime and paint the front, edges, and back as covered in prepare a barn quilt board.

3. Print and transfer the outline

Print the full-size outline PDF at true 100% scale, not Fit to Page, and assemble the tiled pages as covered in print a barn quilt pattern. Transfer the assembled outline onto your board with carbon paper or a graphite-backed sheet.

4. Tape and paint one color at a time

Use the painting-map PDF's numbered key to match each zone to a palette color, then follow the masking order in tape barn quilt lines to paint one color group at a time without bleeding into the next.

5. Finish

Let each coat cure according to your paint's own label before handling or mounting the panel. If you decide you want more detail than Four Winds offers, the paid patterns on the patterns page use the same file set and process.
